The proposals come and then they stop. Something always goes wrong at the last stage. Younger siblings marry first. Relatives have begun to ask in that particular tone. And somebody has told you it is bandish — that something has been tied, and that they know how to untie it.
Before you go anywhere near that, there are things worth knowing.
The duas that are actually in the Quran
These are not obscure. They are Quranic, they are for exactly this, and you need nobody's permission to recite them.
For a righteous spouse and family — Surah Al-Furqan 25:74:
رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا
Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yunin waj'alna lil-muttaqina imama.
"Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes, and make us a leader for the righteous."
The dua of Musa, made in poverty and alone — Surah Al-Qasas 28:24:
رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ
Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir.
"My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need."
He made this dua in a state of having nothing. What followed was shelter, work, and marriage. It is worth sitting with.
And the promise — Surah An-Nur 24:32:
"If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty."
Poverty is named directly as something Allah removes through marriage rather than a reason to postpone it indefinitely.
Before you conclude it is bandish
This article is about a marriage that has not happened yet. If you are already married and it turned cold without a reason anybody can name, that is a different thing, and it is named in the Quran.
Sihr is real and the Quran affirms it. But in this particular matter, it is the explanation most often reached for first and least often correct. Work through these honestly:
- Expectations that have quietly grown. Requirements around income, property, height, complexion, or family status that have expanded year by year without anyone naming them out loud.
- A narrow search. Restricting to one biradari, one city, or one extended network, in a country where the pool that fits every stated condition may be very small.
- Nobody actually looking. Many families wait to be approached and call the resulting silence fate.
- Financial fear. One or both sides delaying over the cost of a wedding — a cost the Sunnah never imposed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said the marriage with the greatest barakah is the one with the least burden.
- Something unspoken. A health matter, a past engagement, a family dispute that proposals quietly encounter and withdraw from.
- Proposals being refused by the person themselves for reasons they have not said aloud.
None of this is comfortable to examine. All of it is more common than sihr.
What delay is not
It is not a verdict on your worth, and it is not evidence that Allah is displeased with you. The Quran is explicit that provision and timing are apportioned, and that delay is not denial.
It is also not a reason to lower your standards on the two things that actually matter. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty and her religion. Choose the one with religion, may your hands be rubbed with dust." — Sahih al-Bukhari 5090
The same standard applies to choosing a husband. Character and religion, verified — not assumed from a family name.
What to do, practically
- Recite the duas above daily. Morning and evening, consistently. Add the morning and evening adhkar — protection and provision are connected in the Sunnah.
- Make dua in the last third of the night, and in sujud, and between the adhan and iqamah. These are the times the Sunnah identifies.
- Widen the search deliberately. Different city, different network, a trusted intermediary, a reputable matrimonial service. Movement is part of tawakkul.
- Write the list down of what you are actually requiring, and ask whether each item is religion or is culture.
- Pray istikhara when a real proposal arrives — not before, and not instead of investigating.
- Investigate properly. Character, prayer, treatment of parents, debts, temper. Ask people who have nothing to gain.
Where people get hurt
This subject attracts exploitation more than almost any other, because the distress is real and the hope is easy to sell. Be alert to:
- Demands that keep growing once you are committed
- A guaranteed outcome by a specific date
- A demand for secrecy from your family
- Any request for a photograph, an item of clothing, or hair
- Being told a named relative has done sihr on you — this destroys families, and it is very often simply untrue
- Pressure to meet alone
What goes into a taweez, and the boundaries we will not cross, is set out here.
If you want us to look at it
If years have passed, if the same thing keeps happening at the same stage, or if you have been told something was done to you and you do not know what to make of it — describe it in your own words.
It stays private. You get a Request ID, so the reply is something you open yourself rather than something that appears in a chat list on a shared phone.
